Customer Rating: Summary: Very handy Comment: My husband has several chain saws but is finding the Alligator Lopper to be handy when the others are not so handy. He cuts firewood to fit easier, and is clearing out brush in the pasture with more ease and less expense than the big cumbersome chain saws. He says the only drawback that he can see is the oiling factor. It has to be manually oiled, but other than that, it's pretty good. I got him the electric since we have outlets in the barn, and the battery operated one wouldn't have been available before Christmas. He has several heavy duty extension cords, so that's no problem. I also bought him 2 extra chains. He sharpens the chains himself, and with the extra ones, he can cut longer before he sharpens. We have a 14 yr old that loves the lopper and I feel that even tho he is supervised using it, it's less dangerous for him to use the Alligator when I won't let him near the other chain saws yet.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Tool for yardwork Comment: I purchased this item because I needed a few small trees and bushes cleared or pruned. My husband had various chain saws (both gas and electric) that I was hesitant to use because of the open chain and the possibility of 'kickback.' My husband is unable to do any yardwork due to back surgery. The Black and Decker Alligator Lopper was the perfect item for me. It works as advertised and I was able to trim several trees and remove a dead evergreen from our yard the same day I received the Lopper. It is light enough for females to handle and the chain is covered when cutting. I would not recommend it be used for small branches as it seemed to chew them up as opposed to a clean cut...but then that is what hand-held regular loppers are for.
Customer Rating: Summary: Cleaning up after the great Indiana Ice Storm of 2008 Comment: I bought this lopper to harvest some firewood from all the downed limbs from the ice storm just before Christmas. It works great. The vast majority of limbs are under 6 inches and the lopper handles them just fine. Even the limbs that tore off the tree, but were still attached came off nicely. There's no kickback, no worries of dulling the blade by digging into the ground and much less danger since the blade is pretty much enclosed by the jaws.
I used vegetable oil to keep the blade running smoothly. The blade did pop off a couple of times -- due to operator error, I'm sure, when I twisted the saw while it was cutting or cut too long without more oil (the book recommends oiling every 10 minutes). But it was simple to take apart and re-thread the blade, just two nuts to remove with the enclosed wrench. Much more simple than a full size chain saw, for sure.
Customer Rating: Summary: Look out hedges! Comment: If these work as advertised, we should finally get through all the overgrown headges in a snap!
Customer Rating: Summary: Not as good as it looks Comment: It looks practical in the pictures, but when you pull it out of the box it is big and bulky. Quality, I think, is kinda cheesy. I would recommend an electric chain saw instead of this.
