Customer Rating: Summary: Flawed from the first use Comment: I bought this to supplement another cooking thermometer that I really like, but that does not allow me to customize my goal temperature and settings as it only has temperatures for specific doneness of meats. Because I needed a thermometer that could be more versatile for deep frying and other applications I picked up this one.
I really liked the design of it and especially the pot clip which is great if you are going to use it for deep frying. It's nice to be able to leave it to monitor the temperature rather than have to continually pull the probe in and out.
However, the convenience of the pot clip is completely negated by the fact that the probe I received was simply not accurate. It told me that my oil was up to temperature for deep frying even though it was clear from dropping food in it certainly was not. Then I pulled it out and inserted it in cool water and the temperature was still exactly the same as when in the hot oil. I gave it some time and the temperature STILL remained the same as before even though I KNEW there was no way tepid water could be 250 degrees F.
I can understand a probe being delicate and perhaps, becoming less accurate if fully submerged in water but to have so many issues right out of the box is ridiculous. I have used many different brands of cooking thermometers both at my house and the houses of guests and have never encountered such a problem.
It also does not have an on/off switch! Because mine didn't work at all this is a moot point, but even if it did this would frustrate me. It's such a waste of battery power.
Based on my experience I would not recommend this product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Mine is a piece of junk Comment: I picked up this item and hoped for the best after my last one quit working after two years. I should have known better. The FIRST time I used it the temp readout switched to "HI" if you pull the probe out of the connection hole it reads "LO" THAT'S IT! I may as well toss it in the trash as there is no contact information for Polder anywhere on the internet and DH tossed the packaging after he "Helped" me unpack it. I can't even find a customer service number on the web to contact for help. And I am not purchasing a replacement probe in HOPES that it may rectify this problem. If anyone happens to find a contact for help please post it. For the rest of you only buy this from a retailer that will take it back in case.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice product except that the probe broke after 3 uses Comment: I had high hopes for this product since I really like to cook. Unfortunately the probe quit working after 3 uses. I carefully store the probe and unit in their own drawer. Also the lack of an on/off switch is stupid design. I'm going to search for a more robust probe and hope I can get the thermometer working again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Why fuss about an unneeded On/Off switch? Comment: There's no need for an On/Off switch. I've had one of these ten years. In that time, I've replaced the battery twice. I bet even if I removed the battery every time I put it away (which would be a hassle since I use its timer feature almost daily), I still would have needed the new batteries due to the batteries getting old.
Only three stars since after ten years it's falling apart and the temperature probe no longer works. But the timer still works and I got a good eight years out of it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Timer/Thermo Probe Comment: I've had an exactly similar model for years and used it constantly, but lost the temperature probe during a move. Now I have a new one and this one works as exceptionally well as the first. As a candymaker, I am particularly pleased to discover this one's thermometer is calibrated and accurate -- a rarity in any thermometer except a laser, in my experience. The probe cable is dramatically improved from my previous model, as well as longer. Strongly and highly recommended.
